That said, I do agree with you thought that the extreme nature of his change is, at best, questionable. His supporters are being duped in some manner by him on purpose.

 

It's one thing to have a change in a policy stance. For example Rand Paul for the longest time was pretty close to an isolationist, he's evolved into a minimal interventionist these days, the worlds changed. Rubio was for a path to citizenship but now claims to only support a path to citizenship after the border is secured. But Trump he is the exact opposite of everything he has said and supported over the last decade and it all changed roughly a few months before his campaign started. It would be like Ted Cruz suddenly claiming he's on board with socialism and running as the most extreme left wing socialist would anyone believe him?
