Defensive injuries put an Offense into much more difficult situations.  I'm convinced the Broncos wouldn't have had anything close to the level of success they had with their ground game against the Patriots Defense if the Patriots starting 2 DT's and MLB were healthy instead of being on I.R.

 

While Tom Brady's timing was off a significant portion of the time when he was missing the key weapons you mentioned,  the Patriots were still winning much more often than not.
