I read this thread and it tells me the scheme can work.

 

It worked in Seattle and other places like SF as well.

 

Talent is the concern.

 

If the original poster would look at the defensive linemen on this roster, which one of those guys would represent anything close to a match up advantage against an opponent?

 

Who is the guy or guys on the defensive line for whom offenses have to account?

 

Which guy or guys command double teams or chips on a consistent basis?

 

At best, being the most generous way possible to the team-there are two guys right now that MIGHT...MIGHT fit that description-Marks and Fowler. 

 

See the problems with that?

 

1..Both Marks and Fowler are injured and have missed most and all of the year, respectively.  Even assuming they meet the criteria above, they haven't been available to us.

 

2.  Marks is a proven disruptor, but you don't expect defensive tackles to provide the bulk of your pass rush.

 

3.  Dante Fowler is COMPLETELY unproven.

 

The scheme has produced middle of the road sack figures, but make no mistake the team is not winning at the line of scrimmage on passing downs.

 

If it were, there is no way a depleted San Diego offense could limp into Everbank and pick the defense apart like it did, especially when it was shut down immediately before and after the game with us by teams that have a pass rush.
