I never quite, 100%, bought into the notion that Sample was a long-term FS prospect for the Jags. He's basically a less-bulky, slightly faster Cyprien. The idea floated by whoever in the coaching staff/FO last year that they'd use basically two strong safeties seemed insane at the time, and it still does.

 

Ultimately, imo, the team hasn't given up on Cyprien at all, but they will go after a new free safety that actually fits what they want to do and, probably, keep Sample around as depth behind/competition for Cyprien, with Evans around as all-purpose depth that can cover both safety positions if need be.

Last I heard, he was in complete remission with no signs of cancer. Per Livestrong, fewer 10% of people diagnosed with lymphoma under age 45 will relapse within 10 years. That's a significantly nonzero number, but in the hard, cold business of the NFL, it means that if Berry relapses at all (not terribly likely), it probably wouldn't be until after his playing days are over.

 

Bottom line, the man has clearly put his health above his playing career. If he showed signs of a relapse, he wouldn't be on the field at all.

...also this. He's loved off the field by Chiefs players, staff and fans, and he's one of the absolute best (and a case for drafting a safety in the top five) on the field. There's no way they ever let him leave that team.
