"What has become extremely important to me, as I've grown in this position, is relationships. Relationships have become the primary objective in my career. I still have a hard time when former players, former players, guys who we battled together, they've been corrected, I've been mad at them, they've been mad at me, and so on and so forth, after a year or two, or sometimes not even that long, they walk up to me and say, 'I love you, coach.' The need to be friends with the players has never been a point for the current coaching staff here. That's just you twisting facts. Gus isn't trying to be buddies with anyone. He's developing relationships with his players, much the same way Coughlin did during his career. If you read some of the comments from former players both here in Jax and from NY, the general consensus is that they absolutely love the guy. Tom was asked if he had changed as a man during his coaching career, and he said that he hadn't, but that he did evolve as a coach to the extent that he recognized having strong relationships with his players was important. More important than his heavy handed tactics early on here in Jacksonville. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
