I don't think making the playoff's is a realistic expectation for judging Gus, given the utterly abysmel talent on our defense. Oh certainly it's possible we could 'back' into a play off spot... but I would'nt expect it. I think a more realistic goal would be for us to see the Jags achieve at least a .500 season, to see them go at least 8-8 in 2016. That type of record would've got us in the play off's this season, but I'll be surprised if it did in 2016. Still... 8-8 would represent a pretty substantial leap from the 3-13, 4-12, and 5-11 records we've seen since Gus has been here.

 

Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly no Gus apologist; I'm of the opinion that Gus should've been shown the door at the end of this season, but that point is mute now. What I do think is that there is no point in having an unrealistic goal in mind; all it does is set you up for disappointment.

 

IF... we can get back our injured players in 100% ready to play condition, and...

IF... we can get some high quality up grades to key positions on our defense, and...

IF... we are fortunate enough to see Fowler live up to realistic expectations for his draft level, and ...

IF... we can do something to improve the left side of our offensive line, and ...

IF... we have a better defensive coordinator, then ...

 

MAYBE... we have a chance to reach at least a .500 season. If after four full season of drafting and f/a with Gus at the helm, if we can't reach at least a .500 record... or if it becomes obvious by mid season that we're on our way to another losing season, then in my opinion Gus should be fired immediately and an interim coach can fill in while the search is on. Seriously, I think that there should probably already be a search on and maybe a few telephone conversations taking place with potential candidates.

 

It is disappointing that the odds are that we'll probably be continuing to ride the HC merry-go-round yet again at the end of this coming season. I guess it's fair to say that finding a good NFL HC is at least as hard as finding the elusive franchise quarterback.
