... I don't know about all the extraneos jazz you guys are talking about. All I know is that Mercedes Lewis has only ever had one or two decent seasons out of the entire time he has worn a Jags uniform. He has not been a very good TE comparatively speaking; it's as simple as that. I don't personally share the attitude that just because he was kept here for way too long he deserves to retire a Jag. I find that more of an indictment of how poor our leadership has been for years for not cutting ties with him than of any lingering memory of ML being a player of much worth.

 

To be allowed to retire a Jag, you should have been a notable asset to the team, not just a guy who, for the most part, just showed up and collected a check. He has been and will undoubtedly continue to be more of a liability than an asset. Those who support his being 'allowed' to stay here and retire aren't really thinking in terms of football in my opinion, but more out of soggy, misplaced sentimentality regarding ML. He does not deserve that honor, but then again, he should have been cut long before now too IMHO. He is not unique, I suppose, in that he will be allowed to retire here even though he didn't really do much to positively distinguish himself while here.

 

Perhaps I wouldn't be inclined to view his retiring here so negatively if he had been cut and he played out his final years elsewhere and then allowed to be re-inducted for one day to retire a Jag, not unlike Mark Brunell or others. The fact that such a low performing TE was allowed to stay here this long just speaks volumes about how far this team has fallen.
