It's cheap and easy because the equipment to extract it already exists.  Engineers have already shown that alternative forms of energy are possible.  Things such as bio-diesel can be grown from a plant.  The only difference between new energies and the current fossil fuels is investment.

 

Here's my problem: things like water contamination are an afterthought in the name of the Almighty dollar.  It's the wrong way to look at things.  Money should not be God, although it is.  But hey, these corporate big wigs are not going to be drinking that water, so why should they care?

 

It's possible to move on from these age old fuels.  At the same time I know it is impossible until such a time when these resources become less plentiful.  At which point, I guarantee alternatives will begin to be introduced in mass, and it wont be because the technology isn't already possible.
