Mapping Places in America Where Prohibition Never Ended
|
Where I grew up in Western N.C. you couldn't buy mixed drinks in a bar but wine and beer were legal. You could "brown bag" which means you could bring in your own alcohol then hand it to the bartender for your personal consumption when you purchased a mixer. At the end of the night, you took your remaining alcohol (assuming you had some) with you. But be sure to put it in the trunk so you didn't get busted for open container. That was state law back then. Later (maybe the late 80's) the state permitted individual counties to vote on liquor-by-the-drink which is why you see the counties around Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington and Fort Bragg as blue because they had conventions, tourism, and military congregations to appease to.
