When you have actual poll results to show a large plurality of the state supports a particular candidate its a lot harder to pull a 34 nothing fastball. The state of Colorado eliminated the straw poll because the Republican National Committee changed their policy on straw polls. Last year the RNC decided that any state that has a poll of any kind must apportion delegates based on the poll. Colorado eliminated the poll rather than change the way they picked delegates. Activist Republicans in voting districts chose representatives to a statewide convention to select the delegates, the same way Colorado did it in 2012. Trump should have known this. The fact that he didn't shows very poor planning on his part (or, more likely, very poor choice of campaign advisors). But it's no surprise that a guy who had been a Democrat would not be familiar with the way the Republican party works.
