DiRocco picked Jack, and Polian began to analyze.  He said that Jack would do well in our system, but not as a MLB.  He said Jack wasn't strong enough to be a MLB.  He said he would fit best as a Will.

 

As you probably know, Caldwell rose through the ranks as a Polian protégé before becoming Jaguars GM.  Assuming they see eye to eye on Jack, it becomes more doubtful to me that the Jaguars will take him at 5.

 

Most of the speculation-at least from my perspective, centered around whether Jack was BIG enough to play the position.  He looked so natural and athletic in coverage and running the ball, it was assumed by many he'd be too small to play the position.  But once people did the research, I and others realized he was actually bigger than Kuechly.  But apparently in Polian's eyes, strength did not accompany his size, apparently making him ill suited to MLB and more suited to Will.

 

The problem there is the Jaguars already have a good young player at will in Telvin Smith.  He has been good enough to win defensive player of the week a couple of times.  Despite some who say he isn't good in coverage, he has made big plays in the passing game, including an INT for a TD vs. Buffalo.  Of course, you could make the argument that Jack would be an upgrade over Smith, and you could never have enough fast, athletic LBs, and Smith would be amazing depth.  But that doesn't seem to be the best use of the talent on the roster.  To me, if he isn't strong enough to play MLB, he's marginally strong enough to play Otto.  While Skuta can certainly be upgraded, I wonder if Jack is the guy to fit that position.  I would envision a bigger guy with more length (Floyd if we trade down would seem to make sense).

 

A couple of additional considerations.  It's entirely possible Caldwell and Polian don't see eye to eye on Jack's ability to play MLB.  Neither guy has been 100% perfect in drafting.  It's also entirely possible Jack can improve his strength and power, and even if he isn't the best player to play MLB his first year, perhaps later in his career he can make the move successfully.

 

But if Caldwell shares Polian's concerns about Jack's ability to play MLB, and sees a Jack pick as somewhat redundant to Smith, perhaps, in addition to the questions regarding his knee, that would be enough to cause Caldwell to go in another direction on Thursday night.

 

I have scratched my head on the topic of Myles Jack for months, because everyone claims that the Jaguars will draft him & that the topic is over.  It then gets reinforced with the 2nd meeting HC & GM whom flew to the west coast to have another look at him (see these comments from this week)..

"We've always scheduled that we would do it privately," Caldwell said. “He looked good. We put him through linebacker drills, change of direction, drops, bag drills."

 

"I had a chance to visit with him for quite a while (at UCLA)," Bradley said at the team's draft luncheon, according to Hays Carlyon of Jacksonville.com. "We had some time here and then some time there, so that part was good. Then, we put him through position-specific drills that are really based on our scheme and I thought he did a really good job with that. He's traveled a lot, so I was really impressed with him"

Then the question people continue to talk about his the situation with his knee, in fact GM Dave Caldwell had mentioned that neither Luke nor Dante had any red flags when he drafted them in the first round.  That would make you think that Myles Jack isn't his choice yet I remind everyone that none of the 32 NFL teams have officially reported that they had any red flags on Myles Jack (despite concerns about his knee all 32 teams were represented at his pro day).  Many of teams are hoping that Myles Jack drops down to him in the draft due to his knee concerns.  I think it was Gil Brandt whom mentioned a story about HOF HC Bill Parcells when asked why he drafted a guy that may only have 4 years in the NFL due to injury concerns & he said almost all the guys I draft only have 4 years (free agency) so that didn't concern him.  :woot:

 

Is Myles Jack a great football player, I think everyone will say yes.  Is he a great fit on the defensive scheme in Jacksonville is another question.  I mean many see him as an ILB on a 3-4 or WILL or ROLB on a 4-3 which Telvin Smith plays.  A few had suggested including Myles Jack that he can play any role, that he is a football player & could even do a SS type role like in Seattle.

 

:whistling:   If Myles Jack is drafted I think the plan is really to have him play SOLB and move Skuta to LEO as they pretty much had already said was the plan should they draft him.  He would do better than Skuta at SOLB but to see the ProBowl level its really probably at WILL.
