He could have put every dollar he made under his mattress and would be fine - no investing required. He could have put aside half of his earnings to use as fire kindling and toilet paper in case he ever ran out, and he'd be okay.

 

One of the luckiest athletes in the world - to have hit it rich in what (I believe) was the last draft without a rookie wage scale, and then still be landing boatloads of guaranteed money despite a very ho-hum career.
