Maybe I'm not understanding the premise. You get to choose what you drive, it's not a fixed cost.
My truck is paid for and I am not going to take on a car payment just to save on gas. I'll drive it until the wheels come off or I get a good paying job, whichever comes first. Right now the price of gas for the 23 gallon tank isn't too bad. When it gets to $3.50-$4/gallon is when my butt puckers.
