That might be the way D&D are going to take the last few episodes of the show. It does seem like they have stopped trying to come up with interesting plots and twists are just doling out the easy stuff at this point. I think it's obvious they thought Winds of Winter would be out at this point to pull from. 

 

GRRM is involved with the show, so they technically do have WoW to pull from.  They've definitely put their own spin on things, and changed plots/characters to make it more TV friendly, but they do have an idea on how the story will progress from GRRM.

 

Everything they've done so far has been pretty well set up to occur according to GRRM's books (with the exception of the garbage Dorne/Sunspear plotline), Arya was always going to find a way to return home, Dany was going to find her army and Jon was going to come back to life and take back Winterfell.  The Hound's survival was also hinted at from the books.
