The Job from a former police officer's POV

#5

Quote:Have to disagree.

It is how some choose to enforce the law that is the big issue. The quantity of laws has no real bearing.

It's even more simple than that.

"The true measure of a civilized society is how it treats people accused of crimes."- Winston Churchill

I am sure you will note the quote by Churchill on 10,000 laws, but frankly I don't see that the issue for the ones enforcing the law, especially in context of the amount of people getting shot and otherwise abused.

It seems like we have come a long way, but now seem to be taking several steps back in regards to how we are treating those accused of crimes.

When everything is regulated and illegal the percent of interaction between the public and police goes up, the more interactions the more likely bad encounters will happen. Marijuanna for example, how many bad interactions are because officers are looking or suspicious of someone carrying an outlawed substance? Got a tag light out you're breaking the law, going 55mph in a 45mph zone you're breaking the law. Don't have a flag on the back of your truck with wood hanging past 6 inches you're breaking the law, cross the street in a non-marked crosswalk, play your music to loud, don't use a blinker while changing lanes, i can go on and on. Reduce the interactions and the problems start to minimize. But we require police and the state in general to play the parent role.
