It really shouldn't be this hard.

One party actually did bring forth more than one candidate who would be deemed competent.  The problem is that the electorate has been dumbed down so much over the past few decades that they prefer to gravitate toward the candidate with name recognition.  That's how Trump and Clinton wound up where they are currently, and as a country, it's arguably the worst possible options in modern history.
