We should tend to the draft and avoid the obvious pitfalls of free agency.

 

If we commit to taking the best player available each and every pick in three to five years our roster will be loaded, we'll have a cycle of talent that assures depth, and we'll be on cycle to become active in the assets market, which will provide annual returns. Our talent will at very least be self-sufficient at best over-flowing into free agency.

 

With one best available player pick, we got Luke Joeckel and multiple picks in return for Eugene Monroe. That wouldn't have happened if we burned cap on a free agent OT or drafted a far less talented offensive tackle to fill a hole as many wanted us to do.

 

NFL owners locked players out to control salary. To a great extent, they got it. That makes over-spending one of the last things for owners to deal with. That's controlled by self-discipline.
