That strawman is about as ridiculous as your understanding of the game.

 

It's my mistake for entertaining such nonsense, but even in your ridiculous example that not even a pee wee coach would call... yes, the players would be at fault if they didn't follow assignment regardless of the call.  That's independent of whether or not the coaches made a good call.  That's one of the first things you learn in pee wee.  Know your assignment.  If there's anyone to be "wrong," let the coach/call be wrong.  Have you even played the game?  And I'm not talking back yard or Madden...

 

The vast majority of the time, there are two linebackers on the field, even in passing situations. 

 

The linebackers crashed/shaded/keyed run left (offensive left) and the QB easily made the call at the LOS to stretch beyond Telvin with the pass.

 

Most of the time, such mental errors are because they read one key, while ignoring another that would have them reset.  As Yo Boy said, they fix that in film.  They'll know better next time.
