I don't think anyone's basing it off of 1 preseason game but instead his entire body of work. This preseason game was just a reminder of the major coaching lapses that we have seen over the past few years. Most were extremely excited about the off-season's influx of talent because lack of it has been the excuse for the past 3 years. Amidst all of the excitement about a fully developed roster, we forgot that our first time head coach was just as young and untalented. We had 7 points taken off the board for an unforced error for gods sake! More of the same absent minded style penalties/gaffs. How does the QB move without the ball? It was another one of those completely uninspired performances that leaves you scratching your head wondering did they even practice this week. I mean complete bush league "because Jaguars" type stuff. We're not talking about just getting beat by a better team. I know Geno Atkins is good but come on! Everyone plays against someone better than them at some point but you can't just mail it in. Especially since "he's just good" was the excuse for the last regular season performance against Mercilus. It's the coaches job to inspire the player to step his game up against a better opponent or help put the player in a position to succeed. After all, we are told that that's what Gus's strength is, motivation.
