To be honest, to say he should be given the year so he can prove one way or the other implies that there still is a question as to his coaching ability.


It's a subtly implicated defense of the coach to an audience that has come to an overwhelming consensus that Gus sucks.


So you are defending him. You are trying to hide an explicit defense so you can then retort to any attack with the "I never said" deflection. But we all know that you are defending him. You still hold out hope that he can turn on around. Most of us realize that he sucks.
