Nothing personal, Mad Dog but you claim this revisionist history too often.  (1)  There's no way of knowing if Coughlin would have taken a GM hiring in stride.  

(2) None of the players liked him and they were in near mutiny after three straight losing seasons in that locker room

 (3)His insistence on doing too many jobs and three losing seasons got him fired and would have gotten nearly any coach fired. 

 

Would the Jags have been better off had they kept him?  Almost certainly, yes.  But Coughlin brought his firing upon himself and Weaver was fully justified in the move. 

Coughlin nearly got fired in NY for some of the same issues before righting his own ship and winning a Super Bowl.   I wish Weaver could have talked him down from being an extreme disciplinarian and trying to be HC, OC and GM. That would have been great - but we weren't privy to any of those discussions and shouldn't assume they didn't take place.  Weaver doesn't strike me as someone who would drop the axe on a coach without trying to resolve issues.  Coughlin was in full swing of an attempt at a dictatorship and he didn't succeed at every role within it.  He subsequently became an even better football coach with a different team that wouldn't put up with that crap.
