Anger is a First Amendment right, and it's completely understandable in this situation.

 

I think the second part is better explained like this: the flag stands for the rights and freedoms we, as Americans, believe in and live by, right? I mean, for me it does, and that's the only meaning it carries for me. If someone wants to stomp on the flag, burn it, flush it, tear it up and feed it to rabid wolverines, whatever, I don't much care. The piece of colorful cloth means nothing to me. What's important to me are the ideas, rights and freedoms represented by the flag, and every time someone destroys a flag they're honoring what it stands for, even if they (and many, many others) don't see it.
