The bye week is the best time for a coaching change. They have to adjust to a lot of changes made by the interim head coach and it gives them an extra week to do that. The Saints specifically chose their bye week to fire Rob Ryan in 2015.

 

I disagree with the "one more game" idea. Shad and Dave never said, "Waiting until the bye week to fire Gus," or "Give him one more chance to win." They said "Playoffs or bust." (not exact words I know.) So it will be January 2, 2017.
