Chris Simms says to end Bortles experiment

Quote:Perspective:

Yes, last year Blake posted good numbers.

But this 2nd in TDs and 7th in yardage needs some perspective.

2015, only 17 QBs started all 16 games. Of those 17 QBs, 3 more left a game early due to an injury.

14 QBs played all season.

Of those 17 that at least started each week, 13 threw at least 29 TDs or more.

I know Carr and Fitzpatrick got injured and pulled early in at least one of their games.

1. Brady 36

(2) Newton 35

(2) E. Manning 35

(2) Palmer 35

(2) Bortles 35

3. Wilson 34

(4) Brees 32

(4) Carr 32

(4) Stafford 32

5. Fitzpatrick 31

5. Rodgers 31

(6) Rivers 29

(6) Cousins 29

Bortles had a good year last year, yes. However, pretty much every QB that played all season got around 30-35 TDs.

All this "elite" numbers talk about BB last season just isn't accurate IMO.

Bortles played as well as EVERY QB that stayed healthy last year (not much better; not much worse).

That can be done literally every single season with any statistic as a decent number of players get injured/benched every year.

Anyways, last season wasn't an anomaly for quarterbacks. In fact, I could argue it was an anomaly in the opposite direction of your post as only one season in the last ten seasons had more QBs start all 16 games. So finishing second and seventh in TD passes and yards respectively last season would actually carry more weight.

Also, I'm not sure why you're bringing up Bortles and his "elite" numbers since I never made the argument that he was even close to being elite. However, I'd say his performance last season warrants us, and to a lesser degree pundits, being much more patient with him then what has happened over the past couple weeks.
