Pence could have answered it more clearly. It was a loaded question from Chris Matthews where he asked IF abortion was illegal, would you punish those who commit abortions. Like any logical person, you believe if someone BREAKS THE LAW, you get punished. Trump answered as such. Following political backlash from what should have been a common sense, logical answer, he was forced to correct himself.

 

However,

 

That explanation takes time and effort, and spending all that time when he could just say "Nope." isn't worth it. It isn't worth it optically or politically.
