Is Blake Bortles the next Justin Blackmon?

#35

Quote:It's too hard to tell and say. I have seen that a lot on here too. And funny enough I thought about that during the Raiders game. One of the commentators mentioned that Derek Carr was excited to be in this area for this weekend. Something along the lines that he was happy to have his wife and two kids here with him or something like that. And I hate to say this. But that's a good way to keep a man grounded and out of trouble. When they have a family to take care of. That's not to say other players have families and make selfish choices here and there. But it's rare. I've never ran across an athlete with a family and questioned his behavior or antics. Donovin Darius when I was growing up me and my family would bump into that man ALL the time at a Publix with his family just being a normal guy. We'd bump into him at Golden Coral during the off-season on Southside at the time just eating with family and being a good family man. So it goes hand in hand. Go back and look at the issues Matt Jones had. Look at the issues Reggie Williams had. Khalif Barnes. Etc. I know a lot of folks are dissapointed Tyson Alualu never panned out as the 10th overall pick (Wasn't his fault he was over drafted) but he's another guy that has a wonderful family, puts them first, and he just shows up everyday and does the best he can. It's managed to keep him on this roster for awhile now.

I think there's a lot to be said about that to be quite honest. Justin Blackmon was a very lonely soul man. He had a pretty sad story coming out of highschool where he had lost a friend or two in a car accident. So he maybe drank all that away. But it's just a funny thing I guess. How that all works. I remember thinking how awesome Phillip Rivers was on draft day. He wasn't at the draft physically. He was at home in Carolina with his wife and kids and you could see on his face and eyes that he was a very mature and fiery man. That he'd probably be a good quarterback. And he has been. Maybe Blake's just not mature. His body language is so goofy on the field when he makes mistakes. Kind of dopey like a highschool kid. Maybe he's still trying to live his life outside of football and doesn't want to quite come out of that frat boy / bachelor lifestyle just yet. And that's fine. But until he starts looking the part and playing the part. Every little thing this fanbase can find on him to nitpick will be found and it will be brought up. Homeboy can shotgun all the beer he wants. He can take as many Fireball shots as he wants. Just as long as he's winning football games and not embarassing this city and franchise off the field.

I do think there is something to that.  My wife and I were talking about that maybe a month ago.  I definitely think that a healthy marriage results in less "dumb" decisions on both sides.  There are always positives and negatives with everything, but having unlimited options and freedom without consequences (a husband or wife demanding accountability along with kids helping you not to be so self centered) can certainly have its downside.  I'm not saying that is the issue, but it certainly wouldn't be out of line to think that.
