The team also wants him to remain on the roster.

It comes down to what he and his agent are willing to accept contractually in a diminished role. If he's at the point in his career where he accepts that he's not going to be the guy, and the Jags offer him a respectable contract to stick around, then he will probably stay. Otherwise, the team will move on.

I think Gus and Dave understand the importance of having a player of his stature (national exposure) on the roster. The media loves the guy, and on a team that doesn't have a lot of star power, it's good to have one player that you know will garner attention. The comments Maurice has made of late about wanting to be here because the environment is great actually helps this team when trying to lure potential free agents to Jacksonville. MJD is a fairly popular guy among other players. He has their respect. If he's willing to stay here, that's going to help this team in more than just the on-field production he provides. He's THE ambassador for this team right now.
