Bring in a new HC and give him time as the team grows, essentially giving the coach a pass for the first few years until the roster gets a point where it should be competitive. That time has come and gone for Gus. But to bring in a new coach, gut the roster, and then fire him after 1 year makes no sense.

Hiring a new and unproven head coach is always going to be a gamble; you just don't know what you've really got until the hammer drops. They may prove to be great or they may be a bust; you just don't know. The best any GM can do is to evaluate as you would for hiring for any job; evaluate their experience and make your best educated guess.

 

At this point, it's appears Dave guessed wrong about Gus. He may very well have been the best option available at the time, but he has proven to be pretty much a bust as a HC here. The seasons not over, and it is still theoretically possible for things to get turned around dramatically, but the probability of it at this point is in serious doubt.
