Bring in a new HC and give him time as the team grows, essentially giving the coach a pass for the first few years until the roster gets a point where it should be competitive. That time has come and gone for Gus. But to bring in a new coach, gut the roster, and then fire him after 1 year makes no sense.
 

The idea was let the new GM pick his own HC. That is a common procedure in the NFL. Gene Smith, not Shad Khan, hired Mike Mularkey. So when Smith went, it only made sense to punt Mularkey too.
