Bortles on pace for 27 TDs and 4,352 yards

Gads...
I'm not sure if the OP was being serious or not, but regardless... Stats other than the end of season W/L ratio are pretty pointless for a bad team, and right now the Jags are a pathetically bad team. I'm sure the OP is intelligent enough to realize that much of BB's positive stats are the result of 'garbage time' production. Essentially, just stat padding; if those stats are also viewed in light of the W/L record, they are far more revealing than they would otherwise be. Is it all the fault of Gus Bradley? Is it Olson? Or is it that Bortles has developed a drinking problem? Is it that after last season other teams adjusted their defenses to cover the Allens and we've not adjusted for that? Is it that we've got virtually no running game? Is it a combination of all these things to create what amounts to the 'perfect storm' for the Jags? Probably some combination of all the above. The bottom line, however, remains the bottom line; is this team better now than it was when Gus Bradley came here? I think the answer to that is, regrettably, no. Dave Caldwell did the right thing to 'gut' that old roster I think. However, he made a major error in then bringing in a first time head coach with all the rookies he had on the roster. First time head coaches rarely have much success on their first time round. Secondly, while Bortles has his strong points, he nevertheless had and still has a fundamental flaw in the basic throwing technique. Given this fact, he should never have been drafted as highly as he was. In addition, he is showing a real character weakness in the way he reacts when things don't go well. He acts like a spoiled kid who isn't getting what he thinks he 'deserves'. That is poor leadership from the one guy on the team you count on to be emotionally solid for direction. Basically, he isn't conducting himself like a franchise quarterback should or would. |
