Unless that big name coach looks at Bortles and thinks: "no, I can't win with that quarterback".


I'm a Bortles fan, but he came out of college with issues with his mechanics and they are still present today. He's likely to be more of a gunslinger type quarterback, which can bring inconsistency to his game, make his accuracy iffy, and in doing so make him turnover prone. He's got the potential to be a 4,000 plus hard passer with 30 TDs, but he's likely to be throwing late teens in INTS. And then there's the fact he puts up a lot of production in garbage time, yet early in games he's not very good (or at least on a consistent basis).


So any new coach looking at this job would need to be confident that they can sort out Bortles' issues, or work around his deficiencies schematically by improving the o line, run game and asking him to pass less. At that point maybe they can win with him, but if they think he's just going to remain the same as he is, then some top coaches might pass and go to a team where they can pick their own quarterback.


And that's without considering he o-line, running game, and the defense. Also, ignoring our general manager and whether they'd want to work with him. In a lot of ways this can be an attractive job, but in others there serious question marks that might put off some coaching candidates.
