I'm saying that a smart GM will not eliminate a top coaching candidate that they truly want to hire just because that coach wants a new QB.

While Bortles may be fixable, if the coach you most want to hire strongly advocates a new QB for his system, then you hire the coach and let him choose his own QB.


Then get what you can for Bortles in trade down the line after letting him compete with whomever is brought in.

That would only occur if a coach like Jim Harbaugh came along and told the Jags he'll take the job if he can get a quarterback of his choosing. I doubt very much they would give that same swag to Josh McDaniels or whoever the hot coordinators are this year.


Also, by "giving up" on Bortles after three seasons that doesn't bode well for Caldwell because it affects him negatively. It undermines his player selection if a new head coach dictates a new quarterback. And that's without considering the need to sell everyone on trusting him and the new head coach to pick a new quarterback. If we are that point in giving up on Bortles, it shouldn't just be bye bye Bradley, it should be bye bye Caldwell as well.
