Like others have said, if you have any oil left in the pan, you can check for water (milky white) in it, which indicates head gasket.
That wouldn't be cheap per se, but you wouldn't need to replace the whole engine. If you see any metal shaving in the oil, that's another level of problem. That would be new engine territory. If you're mechanical you could do a leak down test, I think the kits are like $50. |
