Many people don't know rabbits can vocalize. They scream eerily when injured. When I was 10 I shot one while hunting with my father. Even though I was holding a gun taller than me, I stepped closer to my father in fear when it began wailing. Once dad explained what it was he told me I had to finish the job. Thinking I would shoot it again he told me I had to do it with my own hands. I picked it up by the hind legs and swung its head against a tree.

We had no pouch to carry the carcass so dad poked a sharpened stick between the tendon and bone of one leg, through one of my belt loops and then through the other leg. I finished the morning with three rabbit carcasses thumping against my legs as I walked. Mom fried them up in her unrivaled chicken breading and it was heavenly.
