Centerfire rounds might go a few miles if shot into the air and 600-100 yards if shot standing and straight across at something.


Generally shotguns are like a 50 yards and in kinda gun. Skeet is patterned to be shot at 20-21 yards for example. Trap might be 40-50. After that the mass of pellets spreads out too much to break the targets reliably.


If you want absolutely zero pellets hitting anything you're not aiming for, 300 yards is right on the cusp of safety. I think Skeet ranges officially need a 300 yard barrier, although you'll find people that say the shot can travel that. At that distance it feels more like someone throwing gravel at you though.


Like someone posted, a lot depends on the gun, amount of powder, size of shot etc.
