The difficulty (and honestly, the dangerous) part of hiring a "re-hire" is that the NFL is a "connection" business. Look at the staff that JDR put in place in Oakland. Look at Dirk Koetter's group in Tampa. They are plenty of Jaguars former staff in those units, including one that Jack fired in Jacksonville (and hired for the same position in Oakland).

 

Between JDR and Koetter, I think the Jaguars tree from that staff is tapped out. 

 

Looking at Smitty's past, the only notable stint was with the Ravens and an interesting name that I really have not heard much about is Matt Cavanaugh. He was the OC for that Ravens team (99-2004), and they weren't really that good. Then followed it up as QB coach for the Jets, Bears, and Redskins. Obviously, none of those offenses have been elite but they've never really had good QBs either. What makes him interesting is that in recent years, he's gotten good production out of McCown, now Cousins as the QB coach.

 

He was in his 40s when he was an OC, so its possible he's started to figure things out in later in his career.
