This would also be Caldwells last hire, so if he wants to put all his eggs in that basket, THIS EARLY in the actual season, then he must have a ton of confidence in him.

 

5 playoffs appearances is a lot for a coach that is available, anybody with better record would most likely not be available or hard to get anyways, out of the proven coaches he will be one of the best options. I dont think Dave wants to hitch his last chance to an uproven guy unless he is %100 sure on them, and he has worked with Smith in ATL. 

 

And LOL the other poster comparing Smith to Gus come on man, Gus has the worst winning % in the NFL history, Smith has made the playoffs and with a new team could prob do better.
