I had a bad feeling in previous coaching cycles teams only interviewed Austin because he is black. Now that the Lions are winning with defense it will be less about the Rooney Rule than last year.

  The age factor is the primary reason why I don't think JIm Bob Cooter will get a HC opportunity this coming winter.    Especially,  when factoring in a legal issue he had a number of years ago that he's apparently done a great job putting behind him.   Yet,  I agree that he's on track to eventually becoming an NFL HC.   

 

  The Lions were # 2 in Defense in 2014,  Teryl Austin's first season as Lions DC.   The Lions Defense played a huge role in the 6-2 finish in the 2015 season.  

 

  Teryl Austin mentioned that 2 of the teams  ( he wisely didn't name them ) that interviewed him this past winter weren't truly serious about hiring him.   Otherwise,  the other 6 interviews he received the last two years apparently were on merit,  which is what they should be,
