Nothing in what he said indicated Gus was forced on Dave by anyone.  He indicated he had to make cold calls and they were behind the 8 ball in getting a staff put together, yes.  But there's no indication he was forced on Dave by anyone in the organization.

 

If you want to make the argument there was discomfort in the timing/pace of hiring Gus - yes, I buy that.  But he himself admits being an integral part of the hire, as being joined at the hip with Gus, and makes no indication whatsoever he was overridden or coerced by anyone in the organization into hiring Gus against his will.

Personally, I view the quote from the reporter with his response saying Gus was forced on him. Not in the aspect of him hating Gus and never wanting him to come here, but when it comes to Gus being the guy he wanted back in 2013 or at the top of his list his words sure made it sound like it wasn't the case.

 

There's no doubt Dave had a large voice in the hiring process. I just think Tony and Shad also had large voices. When you look at the interview, I guess I just personally take away that he liked Gus and wanted him, but not as much as a couple other candidates.

 

Like I said, Gus was a highly touted guy back in 2013. We really need to take this into account. This wasn't Dave hiring some lame duck terrible canddiate. This was a guy that learned under Pete Carroll who was having amazing success with an elite defense with this guy as the defensive coordinator. It's just like a guy like Matt Patricia now who is working under BB and constantly winning.

 

Then when you take into account Gus's vibe that he gives off (no one in here can tell me they didn't like how Gus talked or his personality when he first got here, yes it wore off quickly but that man has an incredible optimism and could be an amazing salesman).

 

Was a terrible hire, whoever did it. That's why I want a proven guy and not another one of those highly touted coordinators. You just don't know how they do in a different role. Sure you could hit it big, but it's too big of a ???
