 I'm of the opinion that the Giants team the Patriots faced in the Super Bowl was better than any team the Patriots faced that season.  Including the Giants team they faced in Week # 17 of the regular season.  While the Patriots won that game,  the Giants performance gave Tom Coughlin's team the confidence they could beat the Patriots if they faced them again.   The Giants kept improving as the playoffs went on.  They were a great team by the time they faced the Patriots in the Super Bowl.  I don't think the result of that game was a fluke.

 

 

 While I don't think the Patriots were going to be defeated in a shoot out type of game against practically any opponent,   the only thing that probably could have realistically prevented them from winning the Super Bowl that season was an opponent that could control the game Defensively.  Mainly,  up front.   The importance of a pass rush was on full display that evening.
