There are a lot of factors mixed into the ranking. Wash was a factor (and a huge improvement over Babich, but that's like dividing by zero). The talent was a factor. The lack of offense was a factor because it meant that the opponents could go conservative in the fourth quarter.
So it's hard to separate out just how good Wash is. A big concern is that Wash is a Bradley disciple and the players would do better in a different scheme. Several of the defensive players made that comment. TC (?) said the Jags will run a different defensive scheme in 2017, so maybe that concern has been addressed. Hackett was running Olson's playbook after he took over, so maybe 2016 was not indicative of his ability. The regression of Bortles was also a big factor. Hackett was a successful OC in Buffalo under Marrone. I am glad the Jags are interviewing Chip Kelly. This is a positive change from previous years when the new head coach would just bring in some mediocre also-ran. Maybe we're 'stuck' with Hackett and Wash, but at least the Jags have been trying to upgrade the coordinator positions.
