There was a real need to have a law back then because blacks were kept out of 90% of the rental properties. When you are dealing with an occasional baker who thinks making a cake with two men on top is against her religion, it's better to put freedom ahead of equality. There's another baker a block away who doesn't have that problem, and innocent people occasionally get caught by any law, so the less laws the better.
