We export $236 billion to them.   We import $295 billion from them.   That looks like $59 billion to me.   A long way from a trillion. 

 

An import tax on Mexican goods would be passed on to the American consumer.  That's the whole purpose of it, isn't it?  To raise prices of Mexican goods so American consumers buy less of them?

I should have been more clear in stating a cumulative since NAFTA. What you have to also consider is the rise in deficit each year. This is a far cry from trade surplus recognized prior to NAFTA. The whole idea is to make American goods and Manufacturing more desirable than to rely on another country. Close to 90% of Mexican goods come to the US. The import side is severely lopsided and if it wasn't for the resources required for the American companies within Mexico, it would be even more so. There needs to be some adjustments in the trade sector, not just with Mexico, but globally. America first!
