Ok so you're saying she was fearing for her life up until she turned 82? Let's not forget this begins with her, so if she was fearing for her life her actions were the vehicle for that fear. Unless of course she was ashamed and didn't want to face responsibly, that would be a good reason to wait. Old ladies typically garner sympathy. Personally, the only context I'm viewing this in is she set things in motion with her words and then later helped the perps get off by lying for them. It really doesn't matter what time in history it was, something like that is never acceptable.
