The large involvement of government in setting prices for procedures prevents the free market from driving down the costs of procedures.


 

I was never fond of Rand Paul the POTUS candidate... but in certain areas... like medicine... I like his thoughts and ideas.

Young healthy people need lower premiums and higher deductibles.

Older less healthy people should probably have lower deductibles with slightly higher premiums due to more usage.

 

But the answer lies in free markets.

 

I can buy a car cheaper at place A and than place B.

Under our current system I can't buy said car because place A is in Alabama instead of Florida.

 

If that doesn't make sense, why would it make sense for health insurance?

Shouldn't I be able to buy and use health insurance anywhere I go in the US?

And if that were so... I'd be able to find the insurance that fits my needs and my budget.

 

The care you receive isn't or shouldn't be dependant on your insurance plan.

So the price you pay for insurance has no direct effect on the care you receive.

So... insurance companies compete against each other and it at least keeps prices down, if not drives them down.
