I think the article made a great point about the 3rd verse.  The case can be made that it's about the fate of runaway slaves seeking freedom on the British side instead of slavery on the American one.

 

But, as we all know, we never, ever, play even the 2nd verse of the national anthem.  So in modern America, it's kind of a reach to say that playing the anthem represents an endorsement of colonial slavery.

 

Francis Scott Key did write it, though.
