What is Jacksonville's QB strategy for the Draft

Quote:Let's start by taking a look at what the Jaguars have done at QB. So far they've brought in three... Mahomes, Watson and Peterman. Mahomes and Watson were brought in for a private visit, but Peterman they've done a lot of work on. They first talked to Peterman at the combine, and he was the only QB they reportedly talked to at the combine. They later brought him in for a workout... and then most recently they brought him in for an official private interview. I have to think they really like him.

WIth this in mind, let me sort of target where the QBs are going...

Trubisky is going early to either the Jets or Bills if the Browns don't draft him #1 or make a move up from #12 to get him. Mahomes is next to go as several teams are looking at him. The Texans and Saints really want Mahomes, but they'd have to make a significant move up to get him as the Cards appear ready to draft him at #13. In a trade down to the #8 to #12 range, Mahomes suddenly makes a lot of sense. Even if he gets past the Cards, there's talk of a few teams ready to move up to the teens to get him.

For those who miss out on Mahomes but want a QB it's all a matter of just how far Kizer and Watson will slide. The three teams who really appear eager to get one of these two are the Texans, Cheifs and Saints, although you never know who else might be in the mix as the Redskins, Giants and Chargers have also looked at multiple qbs... plus you have top the 49ers, Bears, Jaguars and Jets at the top of round three all capable and possibly willing to trade up for a Kizer or Watson. The Bears in particular have their eye on Kizer. The Chiefs would love to get either Watson or Kizer. The 49ers are looking very intently at Watson as are the Jaguars.

With all this in mind, I'd say you realistically have to get in front of the Texans for a legit shot at Watson. ...or Mahomes should he fall further than I'm thinking. I'm thinking the Dolphins might be open to a trade since they don't have any real glaring needs, although I'm guessing the 49ers and Bears are more likely to make this move. I really don't see any way a top four qb is escaping round one. If any of the four end up when the Chiefs are up, I'm convinced the Chiefs take him... and the Saints should they not trade up... are just praying the Chiefs for some reason do pass.

Having said all that, the real target appears to be Nate Peterman.

Peterman should be on the board when the Jaguars pick in round two unless the 49ers take him, although the 49ers appear to be scouting Davis Webb more intently. Should the 49ers stay put and go QB at #34, it's probably for Webb.

The question then becomes, can we wait until round three with our #68 pick? Now, it's possible. In nfl.com six round mock, I selected Peterman as an available player in round three. So it can happen, but I don't think it's likely. One team to watch closely is the Bills at #44 who have scouted him just as heavily as the Jaguars. Should the Bills get Trubisky in round one, then it's safe to say they won't be going Peterman in round two. ...but otherwise I'm convinced the Bills take Peterman at #44.

Other teams who might want Peterman include...
  • the Chiefs who hold the #27 and #59 picks. They're probably thinking Watson or Kizer at #27, but if not try for Peterman at #59.
  • The Bears with the #36 and #67 picks talked to Peterman at the senior bowl and again at the combine, however, they brought in Kaaya for a personal visit making me think they might take him over Peterman.
  • the Jets with their #39 pick might be in play should they not get Trubisky round one
  • the Eagles at #43 worked out Peterman and might want him as insurance behind Wentz.
  • The Steelers at #62 are looking at Peterman.
  • Finally, the Patriots may want Peterman at #72 having scouted him as well. Would they trade up?
I just don't think he makes it all the way to #68, but I have to think they take him if he's there and I just don't know that they're ready to draft him at #35... they might though. And for that matter they probably would need to get him at #35 if they are going to get him.
I read all of this and I was originally opposed to QB in 2nd Rd for the most part; and I'm all in for Fournette at 4 if he's there. If he's not though, what if we did trade back with Cleveland (if the offer came about of course) and picked up their 33rd pick or 52nd pick and another later round pick. We could go Howard at 12; Mixon at 35; and Peterman at 52 (if he makes it of course, maybe flipping 35 and 52). This I could get behind. However, I cannot get behind the people picking QB at 4 or even in the 1st in general. We're just passing too much talent at more needed positions in my opinion. I like your viewpoints on this though!
Let's Get Em!!!! Go Jags!
