There was a social safety net in the 1800's.
Everyone joined societies and clubs and insurance schemes that would pay out in the case of unemployment or injury or disability.
We still see these societies today, even though none of them serve this purpose anymore. they include the knights of Columbus, the various Italian American and other ethnic American clubs that are around, the Lions club, etcetera.
All of these places had to really cut back on the safety-net stuff when the great depression hit them, and many went bankrupt leaving their members with nothing.
Even so, none of these places would just help you for showing up. They might give you some used blankets and a cup of soup but if you needed more help than that, well, you should have been paying your dues when times were good.
the government-run social Security program and the government-run unemployment program are direct replacements for these private programs that were overwhelmed in the great depression. And they operate on the same principle: nobody gets help who did not previously pay in.
The question we should be asking ourselves, program by program, is which of these programs invite freeloaders, and which merely help people who have previously paid in.
I think if we worked on that problem first, and sought to first understand, and then minimize, the freeloading, we would feel a lot more comfortable about immigration, like we did in the 19th century perhaps.

Government asks for power to mitigate risk in economy.
Government uses said power.
Government causes and the prolongs the worst economic collapse in the history of the country.

What's the solution?  MORE GOVERNMENT!!!

let's give them full authority to confiscate our money because OBVIOUSLY Acadia cortez can spend it better than we can.

There is no paid in, there's paid to others.  If you don't understand that then u don't understand the problem.

The first question you should be asking is ARE THEY SOLVENT.  FULL STOP.

Then u should ask, well gee.  Are the millions of people that we force to participate in these programs better off than when we started.

Social security is a joke compared to open end investment companies.
State run welfare helped contribute to the cultural collapse of the black family that has caused child poverty in geometric progression.  But by all means keep taking my money for your warm fuzzy feelings facts be darned...
