Some thoughts on Blake Bortles

If people could be convinced that there was a clear and significant upgrade the money would become a non issue. Watson needs a whole season before I put him above Bortles. And even tho I know luck is better, he needs to play again too before you put him back on top. Our division is weak, mostly do to injury at QB. Thats one thing Bortles doesn't have issues with. Yeah. Drafting a QB as good as - or better than Bortles is probably impossible. It would be like landing a pro bowl DE in the third or a second team all-pro LB in the fifth. Probably shouldn't even try, huh? Just draft a damn QB. If he's no good, draft another one next year.
People still think Kirk Cousins is the answer. SMDH.

Bottom line:
No one cares what this anyone-but-Bortles crowd thinks. Not the Front Office, not the Coach, not Shad Khan and definitely not the players whose respect he's earned through adversity and toughness. So, get over it - Bortles, barring an epic collapse, is the Jaguars QB. (02-02-2018, 09:25 AM)Rico Wrote:Anyone could have led this team to 8 wins this season. Bortles was asked to do the bare minimum this season. He did exactly what was asked of him and did well. When Kirk was on the Skins, he was asked to do everything on offense without having the luxury of a #1 defense. The issue is if the Jags sign Kirk and don't make it back to the AFCCG. Then everyone will be like "See! Told you it was a bad move!" Best is not actually any better. Any other scenario is worse. There isn't a scenario that's better than just signing Cousins now. (Ok fine there is one, we draft a QB who 28 teams pass on at least once who in year two immediately becomes a franchise QB capable of cheaply leading a team to a super bowl...obviously very very unlikely). By all means draft a QB and cross your fingers, but don't set any plans for winning during this contending title on a drafted QB. The odds of 1, 2, or 3 happening are orders of magnitude more likely than a QB being drafted and developed to a super bowl caliber QB by time this window is closed. That's all. And still, no one has pointed out what the upside of gambling that Bortles takes the next step instead of just signing Cousins might be. I am open to suggestions if I didn't think of something. At some point people trying to nitpick the edges around the meat of the point is evidence enough that there doesn't appear to be any counterpoint. So i'm trying to figure out this Cousins thing. Lets see yall are saying he is better the Alex Smith and BB5. And he is a franchise QB. Yet Washington felt he was so much better that they gave Alex Smith (who is supposedly an inferior QB to Cousins) a big Contract and let Cousins walk. So my question is why would a team trying to make it to the playoffs and be better get rid of such and great QB(when they could of franchised him again) and sign a not so great QB, and why would you want him if they dont?

Teams do dumb stuff. Why did the playoff contending Bills trade Dareus for a measly 6th rounder to a strong potential opponent in the middle of the season? That one sure came back to bite them. Just as this will for Washington.

The Redskins did franchise him twice too, so I think basket case is clearly taking it too far. What makes Cousins such an upgrade that it is worth risking paying him 150 mil for 5 years and then never reaching the championship game again in that time? Imagine the blowback if you cut a QB who nearly took you to the super bowl and his replacement is the highest paid player in the NFL and doesn’t at least deliver a super bowl victory. It has been proven that average QBs win Super Bowls. Eli Manning. Peyton Manning in his final season, Flacco, Dilfer just to name a few that come to mind. Anyway, advanced metrics say that Cousins is no better than Bortles anyway.
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb There was a much better case for bringing in Alex Smith before he was traded to Washington. Now that Cousins is all that’s left teams will be overpaying. Nothing screams sure fire can’t miss upgrade that guarantees a super bowl with Cousins. That is why management will not risk cutting a QB that brought us minutes from a super bowl to bring him in.

Man what have y’all witnessed Cousins do to be ready to possibly not sign Jalen or Yannick in a year or two? The guys is above average at best. He is better but not 11 million dollars better. I’m a so happen this board is not making decisions for this team.
On another’s notes Coughlin played against the guy twice a year. He would know him inside and out, flaws and all. If he decides to go after him then I’ll support it but all indications are that he’s not and that should be a signal to you. Coughlin knows qbs. He’s rolling with Blake and that should give you solace. I know Coughlin left egg on a lot a folks faces after this season lol. |
