"To be honest with you, we tried everything"

Quote:"We tried everything"..... And couldn't stop a QB from running 87 yards. You're a fraud for saying Khan is a fraud. How's your team doing?

So here's a food for thought, since everyone is hating on Gus for the "we tried everything". Constantly, people blame Gus for the weakness of our defense and their inability to defend the pass. But here's a statistics that I came across which...quite frankly...shocked me. SHOCKED me.
The Jaguars are tied for 14th in the league in SACKS. Think about that for a second. We are tied for 14th in sacks...ahead of the Jets and their front four, the Bucs and McCoy, Dallas, Arizona, Baltimore, and the Giants just to name a few. We are 14th in the league in sacks...with our leading sacker being a blitzing cornerback. Our sack stats are: Colvin - 4 (cornerback - scheme sacks) Odrick - 4 Run Stuffing end Davis - 3.5 pass rush specialist - scheme sacks usually stunts) Miller - 3 run stuffing DT Telvin - 2.5 (rush LB - scheme) Tyson - 2 (run stuffing end) Abry Jones - 2 - DT Skuta - 2 LB Sergio -1.5 FS Those are our leaders, with our two LEOs with 2 a piece. Uh...you don't think there's a problem here? You don't think that the coaches aren't scheming to get sacks and pressure from all over the defense to make up for the lack of rush? That they aren't trying everything even if it means leaving other areas vulnerable if we don't get home?
I know it may be unpopular but Rob Ryan needs a job. He did get fired from his past two but he was working with probably less talent than the jags of this year and the saints defense is a mess without him too.
I think he probably is a Gus guy, and he could bring some aggressive and creative packages to the jaguars. That might be my first move to fix the defense this offseason.

The problem seems to be, lacking the players to run the scheme. So we should probably run more of a base 4-3, and bring blitzing LBers and blitz out of nickel and dime. Not sure Ryan would get much more out of this D crew, running this Seattle scheme, without a proper LEO or FS Quote:So here's a food for thought, since everyone is hating on Gus for the "we tried everything". I hadn't realized we made it up to the middle of the pack. Remember last year we were among the lead leaders in sacks for most of the year with similar results as far as them being spread out over several players.

Remember last year we were among the lead leaders in sacks for most of the year with similar results as far as them being spread out over several players. We are middle of the pack in sacks, and when your leader is a blitzing corner and a run stuffer (coverage sacks anyone) it means you aren't getting consistent pressure. Which we aren't. We're bottom in the league in pressures and hurries and hits.... The pass rush isn't working, even if we are middle of the pack in sacks. Last year it was spread out among a lot of Dline and LBers... We have 4+ from DBs....and no one even close to sniffing double digits. I think we have some good young talent on D that are playing their butts off but are surrounded by old or ineffective players. I wonder though, sack numbers aside, would Fowler have been able to add in enough pressures... I'd like to think so. Quote:We are middle of the pack in sacks, and when your leader is a blitzing corner and a run stuffer (coverage sacks anyone) And thus the problem. We're having to be creative just to bring pressure, much less sacks. And when you are doing that much when it comes to bringing corner and safety blitzes, you are leaving areas in your defense vulnerable. That's even assuming our blitz works, which I've seen enough times 5-6 guys get stonewalled. Quote:And thus the problem. We're having to be creative just to bring pressure, much less sacks. I suspect Caldwell will be investing heavily in S LB and Dline this offseason Quote:It's the only way to get pressure, this season anyway. With the offense finally getting in gear, there's no doubt that DC needs to add to the defense. 1st/2nd round picks + 1 or 2 FA signings. Ryan runs multiple schemes so my thought process was that he would put the players in the best positions to succeed.

Quote:Ryan runs multiple schemes so my thought process was that he would put the players in the best positions to succeed. This is all we can hope for the DC to do when the Jags are as challenged defensively that they are challenged, or at least look that way.
I survived the Gus Bradley Error.
Quote:This is all we can hope for the DC to do when the Jags are as challenged defensively that they are challenged, or at least look that way. I mean, I find it funny that people clamor for Ryan when his Saints defense has been even worse than ours. And they actually have a guy who can rush the passer. Cowboys fans are glad he's gone too. Quote:I mean, I find it funny that people clamor for Ryan when his Saints defense has been even worse than ours. And they actually have a guy who can rush the passer. Cowboys fans are glad he's gone too. I don't understand this either. Ryan has failed miserably at the last two jobs he held. Why would anyone think it would be different here? Because his name is Ryan? I honestly think our defense would be worse with him. Our run defense is generally good, with a few games being exceptions, I'm sure it wouldn't be as good under him. And they actually have a guy who can rush the passer. Cowboys fans are glad he's gone too. Well I already explained in my original post that he had less to work with on the saints than we have right now. I also touched on the saints defense not being much different since he left as well. When he was with the cowboys was before they added some pieces and the cowboys defense honestly isn't very good still. I think in Rob Ryan you get a premier defensive coordinator at a bit of a discount because of his defenses poor performances at his past two stops, but youre still getting a guy who really knows what he's doing and he will have more to work with, hopefully a good union of players AND plays.

Hahaha someone wants Rob Ryan?!
He's been absolute trash everywhere he's been. Stephone Anthony, Cameron Jordan, Byrd, Vacaro, Ellerbe, Jenkins.... There is talent on that team. No reason not to be at least average. Quote:Hahaha someone wants Rob Ryan?! And without him the saints gave up 24 to the Texans and 41 to the panthers. No reason they shouldn't be average...

Quote:And without him the saints gave up 24 to the Texans and 41 to the panthers. No reason they shouldn't be average...24 to the Texans is amazing considering where they were before. And the Panthers are undefeated sooooo..... Rob Ryan is an awful choice dude. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:24 to the Texans is amazing considering where they were before. Ok. That's cool that you think so. I listed my opinion and the reasoning behind it. If you aren't in agreement that's quite alright, but you posted nothing of substance either way.

If you aren't in agreement that's quite alright, but you posted nothing of substance either way.He runs multiple schemes? Yea... And runs them all poorly. It's pretty clear is wasn't a talent issue either. When he left Dallas, they had worse players (lost Ware) and their defense got better. This year, the Saints had a historically bad defense. At that point it's not about the players. They have talent. They were just being used incorrectly. So you saying you want to bring in a guy, who doesn't know how to use his personel and has had some historically bad defenses, makes zero sense. You can have an opinion but I'm not sure it's a good one. Quote:He runs multiple schemes? Yea... And runs them all poorly. As you've stated, but I still think hes a good coach. I've seen him do things with Oklahoma state, I've seen him thrive as linebackers coach with the patriots, ive seen him start to turn around the raiders defense before that imploded, and ive seen him have the saints defense play well last season. I've seen him do pretty poorly as the cowboys DC and the defense of the saints performed poorly this year as well. You can have your opinion and think what you want of mine. No skin off my back.
